In response to COVID-19, they wanted to produce a medical grade mask but needed external guidance on the regulatory process. They had a unique idea for a strapless mask made with their kin tape material for applications where straps around the face and neck are impractical, or a perfect seal of the mask is required. The Health Canada approval process for masks was expedited early on in the pandemic, but in response to discovering 330,000 counterfeit N95 masks in 2021, Health Canada switched to their most stringent mask protocols in history. This switch happened during Spidertech’s initial Health Canada application. At this point, Spidertech had a design which was just the kin tape itself as the mask. In order to get their product to market quickly, I had them source a filter material from a list of Health Canada certified vendors (facilities that held an MDEL licence). Because they were then relying on an already approved filter material, their kin tape mask simply became the “holder” of the mask and not the mask itself in the eyes of Health Canada. I hired small engineering team to build out the device based on design parameters from focus groups and regulatory requirements. Then, get on literally every newsletter in town and hit every demographic of learner. My first workshop was at a small office and was around 25 people. In total, I ran the chapter for just over 2 years. My favourite moment was of an 8 year old boy’s first time using a computer ever, and almost falling out of his chair with excitement. The last workshop I ran was the 2018 national code day workshop. A big event every year, I was expecting about 100 learners for our intro to AI + ML workshop, Google had offered an event space that could hold everyone, and one of our friendliest instructors from Shopify had offered to teach it. I did sell 100 tickets - almost 2 weeks before the event. Knowing that the majority of ticket donations happen in the last few days before an event, I wasn’t thrilled knowing how many people were going to miss out. With less than 2 weeks to go I found a second venue, instructor, and set of mentors, and managed to get an additional 150 learners into a parallel workshop. I also coordinated a visit from the local PM to our National Code Day, and that MP championed for Canada Learning Code to receive a $9.4M Federal CanCode grant the following year. Because we are accessing the users mobile camera hardware and firmware, some phones, especially androids, were not compatible with our app. When I joined, 10% of our android users were experiencing failures in scanning their completed test as a result of having an incompatible device. As a result our reviews suffered, both on Amazon and app stores. In addition to fundamental changes to increase the number of compatible devices, I analyzed our reviews across all platforms to understand the key pain points expressed in the negative reviews and worked with the engineering team to launch a suite of features prior to the holiday testing rush. This increased our Google Play Store review from 2.9 stars to 4.2 stars.
